Prescott Harvey, Meghan Cleary, and Andrew Marsters, all UPS alumni who barely knew each other in college, form Velella's unlikely crew. Meghan has spent the last four years as a book editor, Andrew manages a construction company, and Prescott, after a stint in the LA film industry, has returned to Seattle to work in marketing and communications. Over the course of the next few months, we will ramp up the outfitting of our little ship in preparation for a six-month journey down the Pacific coast and into the Caribbean. This online ship's log is the record of our escapades. We hope that friends and family will enjoy reading about it and find comfort in understanding what all goes into the preparation.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. LLS works to fulfill their mission largely through funding research--since its founding in 1949, they have invested more than $550 million that has led to key advances in understanding cancer and finding effective treatments. This research, while specifically targeted at blood-related cancers, is applicable in many fields of cancer research, as well as in finding cures for other autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes. LLS also provides patient services, such as financial aid, support groups, and peer counseling. Please see the Society's website (link below) for more information on their contributions.
